The first annual tournament was held in April of 1995. We chose the month of April, as this month is designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Much planning went into the tournament, the format, prizes, awards, functions including golf and social events.

The goal of the tournament was to:

  •    Include as many family members, relatives, and friends as possible.
  •    To have an event that was fun and enjoyable.
  •    To have everyone participating receive a prize.
  •    Most importantly to raise money for needy children

We must also acknowledge the many Professional Athletes, and other Famous Personalities that have donated signed memorabilia and gifts that have helped raise thousands of dollars for the cause. Some of the notables are: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, Tiger Woods and LeRoy Neiman

The following is the tournament format

Friday Afternoon The Jeff Berberich Shootout is open to the first ten Golfers in each of two divisions. There is an A player and a B player group divided by Handicap. Entry fee is $50 and entrants vie for cash prizes and a winners Trophy in each division. As with all aspects of the Tournament this produces more money for the 'kids'. So if you can join in.
Friday Night What started as a pizza party at The Berberich home for golfers and guests has grown into a dinner and gathering at a local Restaurant and lounge. Golfers, Friends and Family that arrive on Friday get together, share memories and get caught up on what has happened since last years Tournament. There are usually some special menu items available at a great price for this Dutch Treat Meet and Greet.
Saturday The golf begins with introduction of the players at 7:00 a.m. and golf beginning at 8:00 a.m. (18 hole scramble format)
Saturday After the Round Pizza Party and Putting Contest !
Starting in 2004 we started a new tradition and another fund raising segment to our Tournament. All Golfers and Guests get to enjoy Free Pizza (donated by Hungry Howies), Beer (Donated by Louis Bear Dist), Soda (Donated by Coca Cola). In addition to the great food and beverages, everyone is invited to enter a Putting Contest sponsored and run by Ron, Susan, George, Joe and Jenifer Bigus and several other family members. Prizes have varied from $500 cash to a Big Screen TV to a WII game console. Trustmark Bank has annually sponsored a childrens division with a $100 Savings Bond going to the winner.
Sunday Morning Memorial Mass at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, in Memory of Jeff, attended by family and many, many friends. It is a highlight of the weekend for our family.
Sunday Noon Final 18 holes of golf begin and at the conclusion of the golf, everyone is treated to a Scrumptous meal with all the trimmings, prepared by and served by the Course Staff. During the dinner, we have a 'drawing' with some lucky golfers receiving fabulous prizes; such as a weeks vacation including airfare provided by R.C.I. Vacations and a Major Airlines CO. We also conduct a silent Auction with some great items donated by local Companies, Sports Celebrites and area Businessmen. And as with everything else all money goes to the Kids.
Sunday After Dinner Tournament winners are presented with their prizes and gift certificates. The winning team is presented with a 16 inch carved glass trophy to be retained for one year. Following the presentation of the trophies are the two most important events of the tournament. The check presentation to the charity of choice by the Berberich Family, and finally the Jeff Award, presented to the person or persons who make a significant contribution to the tournament.
